Annual Carolyn & Ernest Fay Lecture and Book Series In Analytical Psychology

The Fay Lectures, which are modeled after the Terry Lectures at Yale University, are an excellent avenue for Jungian analyst speakers to share scholarly ideas about some aspect of analytical psychology. The Fay Lectures, held on an annual basis, are subsequently published by Texas A&M University Press, which is developing an excellent list of books in the area of Jungian psychology. The holder of the McMillan Professorship in Analytical Psychology (currently this is Dr. David Rosen) functions as the General Editor of the Fay Book Series.

In 1988, after her late husband, Ernest Bel Fay, passed away, Carolyn Grant Fay endowed an annual lecture and book series in analytical psychology at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The Inaugural Carolyn & Ernest Fay Lecture Series took place March 23-25, 1990. Verena Kast of Switzerland gave the initial lectures on “Joy, Inspiration, Hope and the Individuation Process.” She was an outstanding lead-off lecturer. Her book, Joy, Inspiration, and Hope was published in 1991 as the first volume in the Fay Book Series in Analytical Psychology. It was published as a TAMU Press paperback in 2004. In reviewing this book just before he died, Norman Cousins said that it “combines superb content with literary quality.”

The second Annual Fay Lecture Series “Integrity in Depth,” was given by John Beebe of San Francisco, California April 12-14, 1991. A book review in Psychological Perspectives described Integrity in Depth (published in 1992) as “deep and penetrating…bridging (the) unbridgeable.” Beebe’s book has been re-printed by TAMU Press and it was be published in paperback in 2005. The Third Annual Fay Lecture Series, “The Natural World of the Dreamer,” was given by Anthony Stevens of England, April 10-12, 1992. Stevens’ book, entitled The Two Million-Year-Old Self, was published in 1993. A review by Anthony Storr said that this book “enriches our understanding.” Stevens’ book was also published in paperback by TAMU Press in 2005.

The Fourth Annual Fay Lecture Series, “Revolution or Resolution?” was given by Marion Woodman of Canada, April 2-4, 1993. An Audio book of her lectures, entitled The Stillness Shall Be the Dancing: Feminine and Masculine in Emerging Balance was issued in 1994 and re-issued in 2004. The following is from a review in Psychological Perspectives: “Her wisdom [makes] this tape set a catalyst for self-examination and reflection on how we relate to our own inner and outer contrasexual partner.” Joan Chodorow was to deliver the Fifth Annual Fay Lecture Series on “Active Imagination: Healing from Within” in 1994, but was unable to do so due to illness. Her book of the same title will be published by TAMU Press in the future.

Hayao Kawai, of Japan, gave the Sixth Annual Fay Lecture Series on “Jung and Buddhism,” March 24-26, 1995. Kawai’s book Buddhism and the Art of Psychotherapy, was published in 1996. The Library Journal recommended Kawai’s book, which it called “graceful, humble, and sure.”

The Seventh Annual Fay Lecture Series was given by Polly Young-Eisendrath of Burlington, Vermont on “Gender, Myth, and Desire,” March 29-31, 1996. Her Fay book, Gender and Desire: Uncursing Pandora, was published in 1997. A book review in The Journal of Analytical Psychology described her book as “fascinating and stimulating.”

The 1997 Fay lecturer and author was Murray Stein of Chicago, Illinois who gave the Eighth Annual Fay Lecture Series on “Transforming Persons,” April 4-5, 1997. His book Transformation: Emergence of the Self was published in 1998. It was published as a TAMU Press paperback in 2005. A review in The San Francisco Jung Institute Library Journal maintained that this book was a “tour de force” which “speaks directly to the needs of the soul in our time.”

The Ninth Annual Fay Lecture Series on “The Archetypal Imagination” was given by James Hollis of Houston, Texas on April 9-10, 1999. The Archetypal Imagination (published in 2000) was reviewed in Choice as “a brief, elegant, and well-crafted volume.” It was published as a TAMU Press paperback in 2003.

The Tenth Annual Fay Lecture Series on “La Curandera: Healing in Two Worlds” was given by Clarissa Pinkola Estés of Denver, Colorado in honor of Carolyn Grant Fay April 28-30, 2000 in New Harmony, Indiana. This special event was co-sponsored by Texas A&M University and the Robert Lee Blaffer Trust. Dr. Estés’ book La Curandera: Healing in Two Worlds is forthcoming.

The Eleventh Annual Fay Lecture Series “Soul & Culture” by Robert Gambini of Brazil was given at Texas A&M University March 30-April 1, 2001. Soul & Culture was published by TAMU Press in 2003. David Rosen said in his foreword, “ Robert Gambini, a shaman-like guide, is both an analyst for the individual and the world. This timely and timeless book will help us save our soul and culture.”

Sonoko Toyoda of Japan gave the Twelfth Annual Fay Lecture Series on “Memories of Our Lost Hands: Searching for Feminine Spirituality and Creativity” at TAMU April 5-7, 2002. Her book by the same title was published in 2006.

The Thirteenth Fay Lecture Series on “The Black Sun: The Alchemy and Art of Darkness” was given by Stanton Marlan at TAMU May 2-4, 2003. His book by the same title was published in 2005. James Hillman said, “Since Jung first opened the obscurities of alchemy to psychological insight, no one has done a book as thorough, as rich, and as significant as this astounding work by Stanton Marlan.”

The Fourteenth Fay Lecture Series on “The Old Woman’s Daughter: Re-Imaging the Mother Archetype” was given by Claire Douglas at TAMU on April 2-4, 2004. Her book, The Old Woman’s Daughter: Transformation Wisdom for Men and Women was published in 2006.

Dr. Luigi Zoja of Italy gave the Fifteenth Fay Lecture Series on “Ethics of Therapy & Analysis, Ethics in Therapy & Analysis” at TAMU April 8-10, 2005. His book, Ethics and Analysis: Philosophical Perspectives and Their Application in Therapy is forthcoming.

The Sixteenth Fay Lecture Series in Analytical Psychology, “The Analytic and Therapeutic Relationship: The Uses and Misuses of Transference and Countertransference.” was given on April 21-23, 2006 by Jan Wiener of England.

The Seventeenth Fay Lecture Series in Analytical Psychology, “Transformation Through Emotion: From Myth to Neuroscience,” will be given by Beverley Zabriskie of New York City at TAMU on April 13-15, 2007.

The Fay Lecturer is a Visiting Lecturer at Texas A&M University for the time that she/he is in College Station, Texas (approximately 3-5 days). The Fay Lecture Series, which consists of four lectures, begins with an introduction Friday evening, which often evolves into a prologue for the book. There are two lectures on Saturday and Sunday morning. At the end of the lectures on Sunday, there are concluding remarks, which usually become an epilogue in the book. The Fay Lecture Series in Analytical Psychology are the only annual university-based lectures related to Jungian Psychology to be subsequently published in a book series. The Fay Lecturer is paid an honorarium of $2,000 upon delivery of an acceptable book manuscript. Also all expenses are paid for transportation, housing and meals. In addition, the Fay book, yields the following royalties for the Fay author: cloth (10%) and paperback (7%).
