THE JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY IXth INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Transcendent Function Today Imagination and Psychic Transformation in Analysis
Friday 29 May to Sunday 31 May 2009 Hotel Kabuki Japantown, San Francisco
One of the defining features of Jungian analysis is the significance given to symbolic images as vehicles of psychic transformation. Jung’s concept of the transcendent function provides a theoretical explanation for this emphasis linking psychic development with the use of imagination and the emergence of higher levels of symbolic functioning. In clinical work, this manifests as an attentive openness to the imaginative processes taking place in and between analyst and patient.
