The next international congress of the IPA will take place in Chicago from the 29th of July to the 1st of August. The theme of the congress is Psychoanalytic Practice : Convergences and Divergences. It is open to everyone. On Friday 31 there will be a two hour panel between Freudian and Jungian analysts focused on clinical issues and on theoretical developments that can contribute to a discussion about what we have in common and what differentiates us from our Freudian cousins.

The panel has been set up by Christian Gaillard and Alain Gibeault and will be co-chaired by the two of them.

The speakers will be Hester Solomon (IAAP British Association of Psychotherapists, Jungian Section), and Sylvia Flechner (IPA Uruguayan Psychoanalytical Society), with Steve Ellman (IPA American Psychoanalytical Society) and Andrew Samuels (IAAP Society of Analytical Psychology) as respondents.

This panel will be the fifth of this type since the international IPA congress in New Orleans in 2004, ninety years after the rupture between Jung and Freud. Each of the successive panels was convened at the invitation of the IPA and of the IAAP by Christian Gaillard and Alain Gibeault.

The New Orleans panel in 2004 was devoted to Freud and Jung today : Oedipus and Symbolisation, with as panellists Svi Lothane (IPA American Psychoanalytical Association), Marcio de Freitas Giovanetti (IPA Brazilian Psychoanalytical Society) and Murray Stein (IAAP Chicago Society).

The second one, the same year at the IAAP congress of Barcelona, was devoted to Symbol and Symbolisation in clinical practice and in Elisabeth Marton’s film ‘My name was Sabina Spielrein’, with Monique Gibeault (IAAP Société Psychanalytique de Paris) representing Marcio de Freitas Giovanetti, Gert Sauer (IAAP AGAP) and Jean Kirsh (Society of Jungian Analysts of Northern California).

The third one, in 2005, at the IPA congress of Rio de Janeiro , was devoted to Trauma and Symbolisation, with Sonia Abadi (IPA Argentinean Psychoanalytical Society), again Marcio de Freitas Giovanetti, and John Beebe (Society of Jungian Analysts of North California/San Francisco).

The fourth one, in 2007, at the IPA congress in Berlin was devoted to Freud and the Freudians, Jung and the Jungians during the thirties and the nazi regime, with Thomas Aichhorn (IPA Austrian Psychoanalytical Society) and Jörg Rasche (IAAP German Society).

The fourth one, the same year, at the IAAP congress of Cape Town was devoted to Some Enigmas in the Prehistoric Arts, with the participation of Prof. David Lewis-Williams (Rock Art Research Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg), Sally Weintrobe (IPA British Psychoanalytical Society) and Peter Ammann (IAAP Swiss Society).
