Individual Training through IAAP

Individual Membership in the
International Association for Analytical Psychology

The International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP), established in accordance with Art. 60 et seq. of the Swiss Civil Code, is an international organization of those engaged in the practice of Analytical Psychology throughout the world.

Its aims are:

To promote the study of Analytical Psychology;

1. To disseminate knowledge of Analytical Psychology;

2. To require the maintenance of high standards of training, practice, and ethical conduct;

3. To hold Congresses.

The IAAP pursues these aims with due regard for the autonomous status and professional interests of its Group Members and Individual Members.

Categories of Membership in the IAAP:

Group Members are societies of IAAP analysts that have been elected to membership as a body. By virtue of its election, all of its members, both present and future, who are professionally and analytically qualified, become members of the IAAP. There are two types of Group Member: those without training privileges and those with training privileges.

Individual Members are IAAP analysts who have been elected to membership without being a member of a Group. Individual Member status is restricted to countries or regions where there is no Group Member with training status. Exceptional cases may be considered.

Honorary Members are individuals who are selected to IAAP membership because of outstanding contributions to the field of Analytical Psychology and the values and goals of the IAAP. Generally they are not analysts, and Honorary Membership in no way entitles them to practice psychotherapy or to call themselves Jungian analysts.

Developing “Groups” constitute a special category in the IAAP. Developing “Groups” are associations of people in regions or countries in which there is no existing IAAP Group Member. The individuals comprising such groups are students of Analytical Psychology, working primarily as professional psychotherapists, physicians, and educators or in other relevant professions. Belonging to a Developing Group does not imply membership status in the IAAP.

Rights and Obligations of Individual Members:

Individual Members, together, comprise a "membership group" within the IAAP, and have the following rights and obligations of membership:

  • To vote as a member of the Individual Member Group. For the Meeting of Delegates the Individual Members are treated as a group and shall select their delegates from among themselves with the assistance of the Chair of the IM sub-committee. The number of delegates will depend on the number of IM’s on the 31st of December on the year before the Congress and one delegate will be allocated for every ten IM’s.
  • To attend and address all meetings of the IAAP (other than committee meetings);
  • To attend all meetings (other than business meetings) of any other IAAP group;
  • To receive all IAAP publications;
  • To pay annual dues.

The Individual Member Committee:

The Individual Member Committee is a sub-committee of the Executive Committee of the IAAP. It is empowered to:

  • Review standards and requirements for Individual Membership;
  • Assign where applicable, Router Coordinators of specific individual membership projects.
  • Monitor persons throughout the preparation for application;
  • Receive and bring any questions or conflicts relating to Individual Membership to the Executive Committee for resolution.

Requirements to Become an Individual Member:

All requirements and criteria outlined below are considered the minimum needed for Individual Membership.

Geographic Requirements

Only persons who live in a region of the world or a country where there are no IAAP Member Groups with training privileges may apply to become routers and eventually apply to become Individual Members of the IAAP. Following the decision of the Executive Committee of the IAAP taken in 2010, individuals residing in Western Europe can no longer apply for router status. If other Individual Members are located in the applicant's country of residence, or if a Member Group without training privileges is located there, the Education Committee may ask the local analysts to vet the academic credentials of the applicant. In general, if there are member analysts in the region or country of the applicant, it is expected that the prospective applicant will communicate and cooperate with them. Once admitted into the IAAP, the new Individual Member is generally expected to become a member of the local Member Group if such a Group exists.

Academic Qualifications

The IAAP requires applicants to become routers to demonstrate that they meet all legal requirements for the clinical practice of psychotherapy in the country in which they live. Clinical experience and a clinical academic degree at the graduate or post-graduate level are the general rule, although there may be exceptions. The Individual Members Committee, in consultation with the Executive Committee, will have the right to grant exceptions.

Personal Analysis

It is expected that an applicant will have a minimum of 25 hours of personal analysis with an IAAP member. Personal analysis must continue throughout the time needed to fulfill the requirements for Individual Member application. A minimum of 3 years comprising at least 240 sessions with an analyst whose training analysis is acceptable to the IAAP is required. Documentary evidence may be requested. Up to 20%of the required hours of analysis can be done via Skype or other means of telecommunications. Every two hours of analysis done via Skype or other means of telecommunications will count for one hour of face to face analysis.

Analysis done via Skype or other means of telecommunications should only begin after a certain period of face to face analysis.

Clinical Supervision

A minimum of 100 hours of supervision with one or more IAAP analysts (not those conducting personal analysis) is required. Supervision is expected to continue throughout the period of preparation for Individual Member application. Supervision should be conducted in person whenever possible. Supervision can be done via Skype or other means of telecommunications.

Personal Development

Eventual certification as an Individual Member also depends upon qualities of personal development, such as psychological maturity, individuation, awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses, and an ability to relate to the unconscious symbolically, as well as professional competence.

The character and personality of Individual Member applicants must be of such quality as to make them fitting members of the IAAP and to ensure that they will be able to represent Analytical Psychology adequately in areas where there are no existing Member Groups. Consequently these applicants are held to ethical and psychological standards equally high to those expected of all other members of the IAAP.

Procedures to Pursue Individual Membership:

Initial Steps

Interested persons should write to the IAAP Secretariat, the Chair of the Individual Membership Sub-Committee or to the President of the IAAP requesting an application form; in addition the following documents should be sent with the completed form:

  • A personal statement of up to 10 pages explaining the reasons that have lead to this application towards pursuing the Individual Membership route to become a Jungian Analyst. This should include analytical insights and reflections;
  • A Curriculum Vitae that includes information about academic background, professional training, and experience as a psychotherapist;
  • A brief statement about eligibility (see requirements above);
  • A list of any previous applications for analytic training, including the name of the Group Members, the dates of the applications, and the outcomes.
  • A letter of confirmation of the hours of personal analysis.

Further documentation may be required.

A member of the Individual Membership Sub- Committee will contact persons making an inquiry and schedule a screening interview. If this interview establishes that the initial qualifications are met, the applicant will then be asked to read the IAAP's Code of Ethics for Individual Membership and sign a letter agreeing to abide by this code while in route and to accept the jurisdiction of the IAAP Ethics Committee. An Advisor will also be assigned, who will be available to give academic guidance until all requirements are completed. The screening interview will take place in a neutral location whenever possible. An interview fee will be assessed.

Intermediate Examination

An intermediate examination (described in a separate document), or its equivalent, will be required. When a router feels ready to take this examination, he/she should contact the chairman of the Individual Membership subcommittee and submit an update on hours of analysis and supervision with IAAP members, Consultation Evaluation Forms from supervisors as to the state of his or her readiness; a 10 page paper on a Jungian topic of choice demonstrating clinical applications of the topic is also required. Two IAAP members, designated by the Individual Membership Sub- Committee, administer the examination; in countries where an IAAP non-training Group exists, an examiner from that Group may be included in the examination committee either as a second or third examiner. This is an oral exam based on the paper but covers basic theories of Analytical Psychology and their clinical application. A fee will be assessed at the time of the examination.

Final Examination, a Clinical Case Presentation

When routers have successfully completed all of the requirements listed above, they may request to take the Final Examination (described in a separate document). This examination is based on a written Clinical Case presentation (approximately 50 pages in length) and is administered by two senior IAAP analysts, one of whom is a member of the Executive Committee (exceptions allowed); in countries where an IAAP non-training Group exists, an examiner from that Group may be included in the examination committee either as a second or third examiner. This examination will take place whenever possible in a neutral location. In preparation for this examination, updates on hours of analysis and supervision are required along with Consultation Evaluation Forms from supervisors and a letter from the advisor as to state of readiness. A fee is required for this examination and will be discussed at the time of application.

The analysts administering the Final Examination have the authority to determine whether the applicant is ready to be recommended to the Executive Committee for Individual Membership.

If a person is successful in this examination and provided that all other documents are in order, the examining analysts will inform the person of their decision. The Executive Committee, at its next meeting, will act on the recommendation and will decide whether to recommend the applicant for Individual Member status to the Delegates at their next meeting. If the work is not complete or the examination is unsatisfactory, the examining analysts will determine what additional work is needed. Once the Executive Committee recommends the applicant for Individual Membership, he/she is required to re-read the IAAP Code of Ethics for Individual Membership and reaffirm willingness to abide by this Code and the jurisdiction of the IAAP's Ethics Committee so long as he/she remains an Individual Member.

Acceptance into the IAAP

The Executive Committee of the IAAP recommends applicants for Individual Member status in a written report to the Meetings of Delegates, which take place every three years at the Congresses of the IAAP.

The President of the IAAP will be prepared to furnish details about applicants if they are requested at the Meeting of Delegates. A majority vote of two-thirds of the Delegates is required for acceptance into the IAAP.

The decision of the Delegates shall be final and no reasons need be given to applicants for the decision.
