In Tbilisi, where there are no places concerned with the psychological care of children, the Green House became quickly such a place, receiving more and more children with great difficulties, including many with infantile psychosis and autism. Since the war with Russia, there are also many children coming from delocalized, ruined families in great distress.

From the New York Times, by Benedict Carey, October 27, 2011. Photo by Bill Ballenberg [click to enlarge]
James Hillman, the third of four children of Julian Hillman, a hotelier, and his wife, Madeleine, was born on April 12, 1926, in a room at one of his father’s properties, the Breakers Hotel in Atlantic City. His mother ran an accessory shop.
After high school, James attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University for two years before joining the Navy’s Hospital Corps in 1944. He studied English literature in Paris at the Sorbonne and graduated with honors from Trinity College in Dublin with a degree in mental and moral science.
But it was when he moved to Zurich and enrolled at the C. G. Jung Institute, in 1953, that his imagination took flight. After 10 years as the director of studies there, he zigzagged between Europe and the United States, writing, giving lectures, editing a Jungian journal and, in 1978, landing at the University of Dallas as graduate dean. There he helped found the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.
He wrote more than 20 books and was a sought-after speaker, often drawing a full house, delivering the Terry lectures at Yale and others at Harvard and Princeton, and appearing regularly in Switzerland, Italy and India, as well as at annual symposiums at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, Calif., which houses his papers.
This accompanying photograph was taken by Paul K. Kugler in the 1990s. Paul, a longtime friend of James Hillman, is a former president of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and a former officer of the IAAP. [click photo to enlarge]

Website CrisisThe server that hosted the IAAP website failed and lost all of our data. Our database manager, Lucian Apostol, had backed up the database and he was able to restore the site with the exception of "doc," "pdf" and graphics files. We have since moved to another webhost, LunarPages.com, and we are in the process of restoring and renovating the website in the background. Although our database manager, Lucian Apostol, recovered much of the IAAP website, you will see that there are some links that do not function. Since the end of October we have been redesigning the website, restoring important files from the original documents, and adding new features. The current website template is temporary. The database/directory of analysts' records (www.iaap.org/database_directory) had been backed up separately on the database manager's computer and it was restored soon after the crash. There were, however, new entries since the Congress that were lost during the crash and we will be restoring these from e-mail copies of the updated records. Thanks for your patience. Call for Speaker to Present
Clinical Research from a Jungian Perspective
The Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research, Inc. (CPR) (www.cprincdc.org) is seeking a Jungian presenter for its 20th annual day-long conference in Washington, D.C., USA, on Sunday, 3 February 2013. A $500 honorarium is offered as well as monies to help defray all or a portion of travel costs and lodging.
Founded in 1993, CPR is a District of Columbia not-for-profit corporation representing a dozen Baltimore-Washington area organizations interested in building bridges between clinicians and clinically relevant research. We are dedicated to highlighting new research on psychoanalytic psychotherapies that characterize effective treatment.
Our conferences feature formal presentations by outstanding researchers, as well as didactic and interactive discussions and a workshop ("lab session") in which all participants have an opportunity to learn. Conferences provide Continuing Education credit for physicians, psychologists and social workers.
The topic for 2013 is open-ended. All that is required to fit the CPR tradition is that there be some aspect of your research that is quantifiable which can be replicated experientially at the conference.
Washington has a vibrant Jungian community. The Jungian Analysts of Washington Association (JAWA) (www.jungiananalysts.org) welcomes your presence, as does the Jung Society of Washington (www.jung.org). Conceivably, additional presentations might be arranged with these two groups while you’re in town.
Please submit your proposal or address your inquiries to JAWA’s representative to CPR, Kathryn Cook-Deegan, via email, at kcookdeegan@yahoo.com no later than 15 October 2011.
Thank you for your consideration.
Feel free to distribute this announcement.
About the Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research :
The Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research, Inc is a District of Columbia not-for-profit corporation representing a dozen Baltimore-Washington area organizations interested in building a bridge between clinicians and clinically relevant research. In recent years, there has been a burgeoning of research on psychoanalytic psychotherapies that enhances our understanding of the process and outcomes that characterize effective treatment. We have also seen the fruition of longitudinal studies of human emotional development that are informed by psychoanalytic concepts. The CPRinc sponsors annual conferences to bring researchers and clinicians together to share data and ideas, with the aim of bridging the gap between the clinical and research communities. Our conferences feature formal presentations by an outstanding researcher, didactic and interactive discussions, and a workshop ("lab session") in which all participants have an opportunity to learn and use a research tool. Our Research Conferences provide Continuing Education credit for physicians, psychologists and social workers. Full information is available in the brochures of individual conferences. Members of health care professions other than these three are most cordially invited to attend; and they will receive a certificate attesting to their participation.
The organizations that comprise the Consortium are listed below.
- American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians
- Association for Psychoanalytic Thought
- Baltimore-Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis
- Great Washington Society for Clinical Social Work
- Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis
- International Psychotherapy Institute
- Jungian Analysts of Washington Association
- Jung Society of Washington
- Washington Professionals for the Study of Psychoanalysis
- Washington Psychiatric Society
- Washington Center for Psychoanalysis
- Washington School of Psychiatry
