In the Spotlight – Allan Guggenbühl

We are pleased to bring a portrait of Allan Guggenbühl written by the president of GAAP, Georgia, Tinatin Tiabashvili.

T.T.: It is a pleasure and an honor to speak with Dr. Allan Guggenbühl — Jungian analyst, author, and the creator of Mythodrama, a method that integrates myth, psychology, and dramatic expression to address complex emotional and social dynamics. With decades of experience working with youth, educators, and communities in conflict, Dr. Guggenbühl has developed a method rooted in myth and storytelling as powerful tools for transformation and healing.

In this conversation, we explore the role of Mythos from a Jungian perspective, the origins and evolution of Mythodrama, and its practical applications in areas ranging from behavioral difficulties to conflict resolution. We also touch on his recent publication, The Power of Stories, as well as upcoming projects and reflections on cross-cultural experiences with Mythodrama.

T.T.: Dr. Guggenbühl, your method of Mythodrama blends storytelling, Jungian Psychology, and theatrical expression in a way that feels both ancient and innovative. Can you take us back to the beginning — what first inspired you to develop Mythodrama, and how did myth come to play such a central role in your therapeutic and conflict resolution work?

A.G.: Like so often in life, at the beginning it was just a challenge—and it was frustrating, because I had to work; I was working with aggressive juveniles, kids who had problems, sent to me in groups. And they were cynical, obviously—they certainly didn’t want to work with a psychologist.
