I Ching and Jungian Analysis: Liu Dajun, Honorary Member of IAAP
The 23rd International Congress for Analytical Psychology was held in Zurich (2025), with the theme “The Experience of the Non-understandable”. Over 1,900 participants attended, also commemorating the 150th anniversary of C.G. Jung’s birth, an exceptionally grand occasion.
During the congress, Chinese I Ching scholar Liu Dajun was awarded honorary membership of IAAP, becoming the first Chinese scholar to receive this distinction. Upon receiving this honor, Liu Dajun entrusted me to convey his heartfelt gratitude to C.G. Jung, the IAAP and all attendees of the congress.
1. Born for the I Ching: A Destiny Foretold
Liu Dajun was born in the Year of the Dragon, and his family named him Dajun, evoking the imagery of the Qian hexagram. He named his study “Yunqian Shuzai,” (Destiny of Creative Studio) a choice imbued with its own profound significance. He began studying the I Ching (Book of Changes) from an early age. With his mother’s encouragement, he studied under his maternal grandfather, from whom he inherited the traditional transmission of I Ching teachings. His remarkable aptitude allowed him to memorize the entire Book of Changes fluently within three years. Though he never attended university, Liu received a unique form of higher education rooted in traditional Chinese pedagogy, characterized by a deep mentor-student bond….
