In the Spotlight – Gustav Bovensiepen

In this News Bulletin we bring a portrait and an interview with Gustav Bovensiepen, who for the last five decades have had a strong theoretical, clinical and organisational influence in the IAAP. We hope you will enjoy Misser Berg’s presentation and interview with Gustav Bovensiepen. 

Gustav Bovensiepen was born 1944 and grew up in South Germany and Switzerland. As a Child he was in a short child psychotherapy with a Jungian Analyst, which had a strong influence on his life.
After finishing his study of medicine in Munich he moved in 1972 to Berlin and specialised in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine.

He trained at the C.G. Jung-Institute Berlin and is a training analyst and supervisor for the German Society of Analytical Psychology (DGAP). In Berlin he established an analytic-psychotherapeutic day clinic for severe disturbed adolescents and young adults.

Since 1995 Gustav Bovensiepen has been working as analyst and supervisor in private practice in Cologne, and for many years he has been supervising infant observation groups (according to the method of Esther Bick). He is Editor of Analytische Psychologie (Brandes & Apsel Frankfurt a.M.) and he has published numerous  articles; mainly clinical articles on treatment techniques in the treatment of adults and children and adolescents, but also on social issues. He has edited/co-edited and written four books. In September 2022 he published the innovative article Destructiveness: a ‘neglected child’ in the theory of analytical psychology, in the Journal of Analytical Psychology.

In the last 14 years Gustav Bovensiepen has worked as a teaching and supervising analyst for the Developing Groups in Eastern Europe.
