In the Spotlight – Joe Cambray

In this issue of the Bulletin, we are delighted to bring a portrait of Joe Cambray, who has had a remarkable influence on our Jungian Community, both organisationally, and – not least – in the field of research. Please enjoy Gražina Gudaitė’s introduction and her interview with Joe Cambray.

Joe Cambray is a Jungian analyst in Santa Barbara, California. He  trained at the C.G. Jung Institute in Boston. Joe began his career in science, earning a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.
The list of his positions and publications in the field of Analytical Psychology is extensive and impressive.

He is a past president of the IAAP, he has been a faculty member at a number of prestigious institutions, including the Harvard Medical School Center for Psychoanalytic Studies, external examiner for Ph.D. dissertations at the University of Essex, visiting professor at Kyoto University, past president of the Pacifica Graduate Institute, and more.
Joe Cambray served as US Editor of the Journal of Analytical Psychology. He is currently on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Analytical Psychology and The Jung Journal: Culture and Psyche. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including Synchronicity: Nature & Psyche in an Interconnected Universe; Volume One of Research in Analytical Psychology: Applications from Scientific, Historical, and (Cross)Cultural Research; and with his wife, Jungian analyst Linda Carter, Analytical Psychology: Contemporary Perspectives in Jungian Psychology. Joe has also contributed to Volumes three and five of Jung’s Red Book for Our Time. His most recent research, “21st Century Unconscious: Altered States, Oracles & Intelligences” has been published in the book Depth Psychology & Climate Change, edited by Jungian analyst Dr Dale Mathers.

I first met Joe in Vilnius in 2009, at the first European Conference of Analytical Psychology, entitled “Dialogue at the Threshold between East and West: Cultural Identity Past, Present and Future”.  There were interesting discussions on how to develop a dialogue between East and West and how to provide opportunities for individuals from the post-soviet region to join the Jungian world. ….
