In this News Bulletin we bring a portrait and an interview with Marianne Mueller, President of the IAAP from 2016 – 2019. We hope you will enjoy Emilija Kiehl’s presentation and interview with Marianne Mueller.
EK: Our previous conversation in an IAAP publication was for the November 2015 Newssheet. You were then on your way to becoming IAAP President. This was almost a decade ago. I will soon be stepping down from the IAAP Executive Committee after many years of serving in different roles. Is there life after IAAP?
MM: Yes, definitely. Holding a position within the IAAP is a part-time job and a temporary responsibility. I personally find this limitation very important. The IAAP’s system in this regard is very balanced and adequate. It creates a good balance between continuity and renewal and makes it possible for a wide variety of people to actively shape our community. I, too, have always prepared myself for it and, during my time as president, I have put other interests and areas of activity on hold, but never given them up completely. When my term of office ended, I deliberately withdrew from these responsibilities and left the field to those now in charge, unless they asked me directly for advice. It is only natural that such transitions also lead to changes and that continuity may suffer to some extent – this is part and parcel of a vibrant, democratic organization. On the other hand, new ideas are given a chance to be articulated and noticed, which can be valuable.
